National Commendation for Urban Design 2022

Jury citation

East of Newcastle The End project is an example of regional urban revitalization that challenges familiar typologies to create a diversity of built forms and experiences, skillfully retaining and reinterpreting existing buildings and providing new systems of travel for the benefit of all.

Such changes in regional planning require considerable time and dedication from authorities, planners and landowners alongside a team of skilled designers working in harmony with a common vision for the present and the future.

Newcastle East End achieves more than typological change; it activates the street, creates new lanes that can expand as adjacent areas are developed, and allows for increased densification of mixed-use programs while improving amenity. The team is to be commended for creating a high quality urban model that has the ability to enrich many other regional locations.
