Mississauga is on the hunt for “the next big thing” when it comes to the best architectural and design achievements the city has to offer.

Submissions are now open for the Mississauga Urban Design Awards 2023, which will honor the most innovative, interesting and inspiring projects that have recently landed within the city’s borders.

The Mississauga city officials behind the awards describe the latest program as “a celebration of excellence for innovative, dynamic and forward-thinking urban design projects that are transforming Mississauga.”

Under the theme “The Next Big Thing”, the latest competition will accept nominations until April 14, 2023.

Once all entries are received, a judging panel comprised of members of the design community and a Mississauga city councilor will select the winners in the various categories next fall.

The Mississauga Urban Design Awards competition has begun in 1981 and is the oldest awards program of its kind in Ontario.

Held every two years, the The Urban Design Awards aim to inspire and celebrate design leaders who are helping to improve residents’ quality of life by shaping Mississauga’s diverse urban landscape, city officials say.

“The awards are a great opportunity to recognize designers, architects, developers and builders who have played a vital role in our efforts to build a world-class city. These private and public spaces beautify our city and provide much-needed green spaces, public art and facilities for businesses and residents,” Mayor Bonnie Crombie said last year at the 2021 Urban Design Awards. .

In selecting winners in various categories, the judging panel evaluates entries on a city- and community-wide scale, considering elements of green living, innovation, context, execution and healthy development. .

All entries must be located in Mississauga and must have been completed when the submission is received by the City.

Owners, architects, designers, landscape architects, developers or others who played a key role in the design, development or construction can nominate a project, the city says.

Interior design projects, plans and proposals as well as previously nominated projects are not eligible.

Nominated projects are eligible for the following awards:

  • Award of Excellence: awarded to projects that demonstrate excellence in all evaluation criteria
  • Merit Award: awarded to projects that demonstrate excellence in one or more of the judging criteria
  • Healthy by Design: Awarded to projects that exemplify the six healthy community design elements of density, proximity to services, mix of land uses, street connectivity, streetscape features, and parking

The Mississauga Urban Design Awards also include a People’s Choice Award given to the project that receives the most public support through online voting.

Voting for the People’s Choice Award will begin next June.

Submitted projects must include:

  • exterior photos of your project (minimum of five)
  • brief description of the project
  • names and email addresses of key project contributors
  • signed consent form from the project owner for the jury to visit the project site
