JARtB House / Kavellaris Urban Design
Text description provided by the architects. JARtB House reconnects the abandoned notion that art and architecture are separate, techne. Half house, half art gallery, the synthesis of the two typologies is redefined in a singular expression. A new hybrid is institutionalized.
Art is used to connect, inform and program the space instead of the program that contains it. Art is not defined as “in” or “on” the building, the building is the artifact Architecture and art cannot be separated!
Art goes beyond cultural expression and becomes an architectural syntax. Ornamentation becomes more than architectural decoration, more than a shed or a duck decorated with Venturi. JARtB House becomes the Alchemy of the “Decorated Duck” expressed in an urban neo-baroque paradigm.
A controlled chaos of interlocking geometric shapes sculpts the facade to cultivate theatrical drama. The façade is internalized and redefined. The exterior facades become translucent interior frescoes. A two-way façade typology emerges.
Circulation non-spaces are redefined into a demarcated linear programmatic white “strip” running through the full length of the site envelope. The art gallery was born. Double-height spaces, interlocking volumes and visual connections are connected by Art. Art informs architecture and program, art becomes an architectural element, art now has a use.
JARtB House becomes a livable art.
