Defense Minister Dr. Ng Eng Hen today addressed the seventh plenary session of the 19th Shangri-La Dialogue (SLD), on the topic “New ideas to ensure regional stability”alongside Canadian Minister of National Defense Anita Anand and Fiji Minister of Defence, National Security and Policing, Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Inia Batikoto Seruiratu.
In his speech, Dr Ng warned that the world had become more divided than before. He said the war in Ukraine has hardened security alliances while supply chain disruptions and inflation have prompted countries to turn inward. He underscored the close interdependence between Asian economies and urged all countries to strengthen these mutually beneficial ties to build an inclusive and stable region.
Dr. Ng also highlighted the important role that defense establishments can play in strengthening the regional security architecture. He cited the ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting – Plus as a key platform for the regional militaries to develop norms and mechanisms to de-escalate and avoid conflict, for the continued security and prosperity of the ‘Asia.
Dr. Ng also moderated a ministerial roundtable after speaking in plenary.
