272 Hedges Avenue Pedestal Residential Building / Contreras Earl Architecture
Text description provided by the architects. Rising 44 stories above its waterfront setting, 272 Hedges Avenue presents an unfolding experience of architectural elegance and unparalleled amenity, with the pedestal design inspired by the natural forces of the location. coast of the project. Australian property developer Sunland Group has appointed Contreras Earl Architecture to design the Mermaid Beach Tower’s two-story pedestal base, including interior and common areas.
Inspired by patterns of wind and water on rocks and sand, the exquisite design brings human scale to the tower’s ground plane and creates an engaging, sculptural connection to the streetscape and parklands. It marks the transition between the coast and the urban periphery, and the continuous progression from exterior to interior offers a unique spatial experience for residents and visitors.
Organic design recognizes the most extraordinary natural sculptors of all: the wind and the ocean. The sculpted curves of the exterior resemble windswept ridges and eroding sand, while the vast voids and vaults of the interior evoke a naturally ocean-eroded rock cave. The nature of the materials reinforces this effect, with a distinctive semi-reflective stainless steel facade that subtly reflects the streetscape and surroundings, and a concrete finish of the large foyer, which looks like a cave and is elemental.
The transition from exterior to interior is fluid and inviting, and artistic lighting subtly follows the ridge lines to enhance the flow from one space to the next. Refined sculptural details in the architectural and interior details reinforce the experiential quality of the pedestal, foyer and common areas. This includes the stainless steel concierge desk in the lobby as well as the elevator lobby – a private space enclosed within the overhead arches.
The private facilities on the ground floor include a residents’ lounge, a conference room and a reception room. On the first floor, a 15 meter swimming pool and a spa are installed under a vaulted ceiling and open onto a garden terrace overlooking the coastal park. Other resident amenities include a gym, sauna, steam room and treatment rooms. The minimalist and tactile spaces are designed for the senses, creating a spatial sequence and atmosphere that will have a sensory and soothing effect on the user.
